General UNICROSS Postgraduate Admission Requirements

The university has a general O’Level requirement that applies across its postgraduate programmes.

O’Level requirement: Candidates must have at least five credits, including English Language and four other relevant subjects, obtained in not more than two sittings.

For candidates whose O’Level results date from 2020 or earlier, the 2026/2027 prospectus states that original certificates must be presented. Statements of result or result slips are not accepted in that circumstance.

Workers: Applicants who are employed must also provide the required written permission from their employer.

The general requirements are only the starting point, however. UNICROSS makes it clear that applicants must also satisfy the specific academic requirements for their selected programme.

PGD Admission Requirements at UNICROSS

For the general Postgraduate Diploma route, applicants should have either:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Third Class Honours in a relevant field from UNICROSS or another university recognized by the Senate; or
  • An HND with at least Lower Credit in a relevant field from an institution accredited by NBTE and recognized by UNICROSS.

However, the PGD requirements vary considerably from one programme to another.

Some important examples include:

For PGD Agricultural Economics and Extension, graduates from Economics, Sociology or Sociology and Anthropology may also be considered under the programme’s additional provisions.

For PGD Animal Science, related disciplines such as Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Genetics and Breeding may be accepted for the broader entry route, but the university specifically states that only Bachelor’s degree holders in Animal Science or Animal Health are acceptable for the PGD in Animal Science.

For PGDE, an HND at Lower Credit in any discipline may be accepted.

For PGD Electrical/Electronic Engineering, a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower in Physics, Mathematics and/or Physics/Electronics may be accepted.

For PGD Biology, eligible backgrounds include Biology, Zoology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and certain Agricultural Science degrees.

For PGD Applied Microbiology, applicants are expected to have at least Second Class Lower in Biology or a related subject.

For PGD Mathematics and Statistics, graduates from Physical Sciences and related disciplines may qualify, while HND holders with at least Lower Credit in relevant Physical Science areas may also be considered.

For PGD Business Administration, a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower in a related discipline is specified.

For PGD Marketing, the university lists five O’Level credits including English Language, Mathematics and Economics, Marketing, Commerce or another business-related subject.

For PGD Computer Science, candidates with Third Class degrees or HND Upper Credit in a science-related field may be considered.

For PGD Anatomy, candidates with Third Class in Anatomy, Radiography or other relevant Basic Medical Science fields may apply.

These examples show why applicants should check the specific requirements rather than assuming that meeting the general PGD rule automatically guarantees eligibility.

Master’s Degree Admission Requirements

The general Master’s route at UNICROSS has three main entry pathways.

First route: A Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 on a 4-point scale or 3.00 on a 5-point scale, in the relevant field.

Second route: A Bachelor’s degree with Third Class Honours, together with a relevant PGD having a minimum CGPA of 2.75 on a 4-point scale or 3.00 on a 5-point scale.

Third route: An HND with at least Lower Credit, together with a relevant PGD meeting the specified CGPA requirement.

The qualifications must be in the relevant field and obtained from institutions recognized by the Senate of UNICROSS.

This is particularly useful for applicants who have a Third Class degree or HND but have subsequently completed an appropriate postgraduate diploma.

Important Master’s Programme Exceptions

The general Master’s rule does not apply identically to every programme.

M.Sc. Agriculture: Applicants may qualify with a Second Class Lower degree and the specified CGPA in Agriculture or related disciplines such as Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Genetics and Breeding.

M.Sc. Mass Communication: Applicants should generally have Second Class Lower in Communication-related fields with at least 3.00 CGPA on a 5-point scale. Candidates below 3.00 may be considered where there is evidence of outstanding professional practice.

Application Fee and Deadline

The official 2026/2027 UNICROSS postgraduate application fee is ₦42,000, and the university describes it as non-refundable.

The admission notice published on 20 July 2026 states that the deadline is six weeks from the date of publication and that applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

Because admission deadlines can be extended or otherwise updated by the university, applicants should check the official postgraduate portal before making payment, particularly if applying close to the deadline.

Important Things Applicants Should Know

Your first degree must match your intended programme.

Postgraduate admission is not simply based on having a university degree. Many programmes require a specific academic background.

A Third Class degree can still provide a Master’s pathway.

Under the general rules, a Third Class Bachelor’s degree can be considered for Master’s admission when combined with a relevant PGD meeting the specified CGPA requirement.

HND holders also have postgraduate pathways.

An HND with Lower Credit can provide access to certain PGD programmes and, when combined with the required PGD, can also lead to some Master’s programmes.

Do not assume every PGD accepts Third Class.

Some programmes have stricter requirements. For example, PGD Electrical/Electronic Engineering has a Second Class Lower route for certain Physics and Mathematics backgrounds, while PGD Marketing has a specific O’Level subject combination.

Do not use awaiting results where the university requires certificates.

UNICROSS explicitly states that awaiting results are not admissible for the application documentation.

Workers need employer documentation.

If you are employed, make arrangements for the appropriate release or permission letter before completing your application.

How Long Does a UNICROSS Postgraduate Programme Take?

The duration depends on the programme and mode of study.

PGD: Normally 12–24 months full-time.

Professional PGD in Landscape Planning and Urban and Regional Planning: 18–27 months full-time.

Master’s: Normally 18–24 months full-time.

PhD: Normally 36–60 months full-time.

For part-time study, UNICROSS states that the programme should run for at least one and a half times the minimum full-time period.

Therefore, an applicant who works full-time should consider the longer part-time duration when deciding between the two study modes.
