EBSU Postgraduate Admission Requirements

The EBSU postgraduate admission requirements depend on the level of programme being applied for and, in some cases, the specific department. The most important distinction is between PGD/PGDE, Master’s-level programmes and Ph.D. programmes.

General O’Level Requirement

EBSU’s published postgraduate requirements state that candidates seeking admission into the School of Postgraduate Studies must have a credit pass in O’Level English Language for all programmes.

Programme Category O’Level Mathematics Requirement
Medical/Para-Medical Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences, science-related programmes (including Agricultural Sciences and Education) Credit pass
Management Sciences, Arts, Social Sciences and Law Pass may be considered
Economics, Accountancy, Banking and Finance Credit pass (stated exceptions)

This means that applicants should not assume that the same O’Level combination applies to every postgraduate course at EBSU.

EBSU PGD Admission Requirements

For Postgraduate Diploma programmes, EBSU’s published requirements provide several entry routes. A candidate may qualify with:

Entry Route Condition
Bachelor’s degree From EBSU or another institution recognised by the university’s Senate
HND Passed at Upper Credit level in a related discipline
Third Class Bachelor’s degree In an appropriate area, subject to the stated CGPA requirement
HND (Lower Credit) In a related discipline, where the applicant has relevant work experience

For candidates with a Third Class degree, the published requirement states that the candidate should not have a CGPA below 2.00 on a 5-point scale.

Therefore, a candidate who does not meet the direct Master’s entry requirement may have the PGD route available, provided the candidate satisfies the requirements of the particular programme.

EBSU Master’s Degree Admission Requirements

For Master’s programmes, EBSU’s published postgraduate requirements state that graduates of EBSU or other approved universities should have obtained the relevant degree with at least a good Second Class Honours or its equivalent.

Candidates who already hold an EBSU PGD or a PGD from another recognised institution may also qualify for Master’s admission where they have a CGPA of at least 2.50 on a 5-point scale or 60% average.

However, the published requirements identify some departmental exceptions. Economics, Psychology, Nursing Science and Applied Biology have higher stated PGD CGPA requirements, with the requirement indicated as 3.00 or 3.50 on a 5-point scale, depending on the programme.

This is important because meeting the general Master’s requirement does not automatically mean that a candidate qualifies for every EBSU Master’s programme.

EBSU M.Ed Admission Requirements

EBSU’s 2026/2027 advert lists a number of M.Ed. programmes, particularly within the Faculty of Education. These include:

M.Ed. Programmes
English Education
Social Studies and Civic Education
Economics Education
Igbo Education
Religion Education
Office Technology and Management Education
Accounting Education
Marketing Education
Curriculum Studies
Educational Management
Educational Psychology
Guidance and Counselling
Clothing and Textiles
Family and Consumer Science
Family Relations and Child Development
Foods, Nutrition and Hospitality Management
Special Education

The exact academic background required for admission depends on the particular programme. The 2026/2027 advert identifies the programmes and qualifications but does not provide individual entry requirements beside every programme.

EBSU MBA Admission Requirements

EBSU lists Master of Business Administration (MBA) under Accountancy and also lists an MBA in Banking and Finance under the Department of Banking and Finance.

Because the 2026/2027 advert does not state a separate detailed MBA entry requirement, applicants should confirm the departmental requirements applicable to the MBA option they intend to study.

EBSU MPA Admission Requirements

The 2026/2027 postgraduate advert lists Public Administration at PGD, MPA, M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels.

Therefore, candidates interested in Public Administration can apply for the relevant qualification level for which they satisfy the university’s admission conditions.

EBSU LL.M. Admission Requirements

The Faculty of Law offers LL.M. programmes in Commercial and Industrial Law, Jurisprudence and International Law, and Public and Private Law. The 2026/2027 advert lists LL.M. alongside PGD and Ph.D. options in these areas.

Applicants should ensure that their previous academic qualification is relevant to the proposed postgraduate Law programme and confirm any additional departmental conditions before applying.

EBSU MPH Admission Requirements

The 2026/2027 admission advert lists Master of Public Health (MPH) under the Faculty of Clinical Medicine.

The official advert identifies the programme but does not provide a separate detailed qualification breakdown for MPH on the two-page admission notice.

Candidates interested in the programme should therefore verify the specific academic and professional requirements from the relevant EBSU department before submitting an application.

EBSU Ph.D Admission Requirements

For Ph.D. admission, EBSU’s published postgraduate requirements state that candidates should have a relevant Master’s degree from an approved university. The published requirement gives a minimum of:

Grading Scale Minimum CGPA
5-point scale 4.00
4-point scale 3.50

The proposed area of doctoral research must also correspond with the candidate’s academic background and the programme being applied for.

EBSU M.Sc./Ph.D Programme

EBSU also provides an M.Sc./Ph.D route in its published postgraduate requirements.

Candidates who have completed a Master’s programme but do not meet the required CGPA for direct Ph.D admission may be admitted through an appropriate Master’s/Ph.D route, such as M.Sc./Ph.D, M.Ed./Ph.D, LL.M./Ph.D or M.A./Ph.D, as applicable to the discipline.

The published requirement states that candidates proceeding through this route would need to meet the specified Master’s-course CGPA requirement before proceeding to the Ph.D stage without presenting a dissertation.

EBSU Postgraduate Programme Duration

The published EBSU postgraduate information gives the following programme durations:

Programme Published Duration
PGD 12 calendar months / 3 semesters
Master’s 24 calendar months / 5 semesters
Ph.D 3 years / 6 semesters
M.Sc./Ph.D 4 years / 8 semesters

Candidates are expected to undertake the relevant coursework and submit project or research work as required by their programme.

Because programme structures can change, candidates should confirm the duration applicable to their specific programme at the point of admission.

EBSU Postgraduate Admission: Important Requirements Before Applying

Apart from academic qualifications, there are several application requirements contained in EBSU’s official 2026/2027 admission instructions.

Requirement Details
Academic transcripts Applicants must request their previous institutions to send transcripts directly to the EBSU School of Postgraduate Studies at spgs@ebsu.edu.ng before the close of applications
Three referees Reference letters from three referees are required, and two of the three must be academics acquainted with the applicant’s academic ability
Original documents Applicants must upload the originals of all required documents before submitting the application

Applicants should therefore arrange their referees early rather than waiting until the application deadline, and prepare their academic credentials and other required documents before starting the online application.

Who Can Apply for EBSU Postgraduate Programmes?

EBSU postgraduate admission is open to candidates whose previous academic qualifications meet the requirements for their intended programme. Depending on the programme, applicants may enter through a Bachelor’s degree, HND, PGD, Master’s degree, or relevant professional or equivalent qualifications where recognised by the university.

The exact entry route depends on the postgraduate qualification and programme. For example, PGD admission has provisions for Bachelor’s degree holders, HND holders and certain Third Class degree holders, while Ph.D admission requires a relevant Master’s degree and the required postgraduate performance.

EBSU Postgraduate Courses: How to Choose the Right Programme

With the number of programmes offered by EBSU, applicants should not choose a postgraduate course based only on the name of the programme. Before applying, check:

Checklist Item What to Confirm
Academic relevance Whether your Bachelor’s or previous qualification is relevant to the proposed programme
O’Level subjects Whether your O’Level subjects meet the requirements
CGPA Whether your CGPA meets the required threshold
Programme level Whether the programme is offered at PGD, Master’s or Ph.D level
Specialisation Whether the programme has a specialisation that matches your intended area of study
Transcript Whether your academic transcript can be obtained and sent to EBSU
Departmental conditions Whether the specific department has additional requirements

This is particularly important for programmes with specialised requirements.

Can a Third Class graduate apply for EBSU postgraduate admission?

Yes, the published requirements provide a route into PGD programmes for holders of a Third Class degree, subject to the stated minimum CGPA of 2.00 on a 5-point scale.

However, Third Class graduates should not assume that they can proceed directly into every Master’s programme. The Master’s requirements are different.

What CGPA is required for EBSU Master’s admission?

The general published requirement for candidates entering a Master’s programme with a PGD is at least 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 60% average. Some departments have higher requirements.

What CGPA is required for EBSU Ph.D admission?

The published EBSU postgraduate requirement states a minimum of 4.00 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 3.50 CGPA on a 4-point scale for candidates seeking direct Ph.D admission from a Master’s programme.

Three referees are required. Two of the three must be academics who are acquainted with the applicant’s academic ability.

Final Takeaway

The EBSU postgraduate courses cover a wide range of academic and professional fields, from Agriculture, Science, Education, Law and Health Sciences to Management, Social Sciences, Humanities, Peace and Strategic Studies and Reproductive Health.

For admission requirements, the qualification you need depends heavily on the programme. A PGD applicant may qualify through a Bachelor’s degree, HND or Third Class degree route, while Master’s applicants generally need a relevant Bachelor’s degree or qualifying PGD. Ph.D applicants require a relevant Master’s degree and the required postgraduate CGPA.

The 2026/2027 EBSU postgraduate advert also requires applicants to submit the original documents requested, provide three referees and arrange for their academic transcripts to be sent directly to the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Because EBSU’s official 2026/2027 advert identifies the programmes but does not state a separate entry requirement beside every individual course, candidates should treat the general requirements as a starting point and confirm any additional departmental requirements for their chosen programme before applying.

For the most complete programme list, the official 2026/2027 EBSU postgraduate admission advert should be used alongside the university’s current faculty information.
