OOU Postgraduate Admission Requirements

Now to the part that matters most to applicants: what qualification do you need before OOU will consider you for postgraduate admission?

OOU divides its general admission requirements according to the type of postgraduate programme.

Requirement for OOU Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

For a PGD programme, OOU requires either:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from OOU or another university approved by the Senate, with not less than Third Class; or
  • An HND at not less than Lower Credit level.

This gives PGD programmes a relatively broad entry route for graduates who may not meet the direct Master’s requirement.

The relevant undergraduate qualification must, however, be appropriate for the PGD programme being applied for.

OOU Master’s Degree Requirements

For academic Master’s programmes such as M.A., M.Sc., M.Ed. and M.FA., OOU normally requires a minimum of Second Class Lower Bachelor’s degree from OOU or another Senate-approved university in a relevant discipline.

The word relevant matters here.

Having a Second Class Lower degree does not automatically qualify an applicant for every Master’s programme at OOU. Some departments specify the accepted academic backgrounds separately.

For example, OOU has special requirements for programmes in Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Cancer Science, Architecture and other specialised fields.

OOU Professional Master’s Requirements

Professional Master’s programmes generally require one of the following routes:

Route 1:
A Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower from OOU or another Senate-approved university.

Route 2:
A Third Class Bachelor’s degree plus a credit-level PGD in a relevant programme.

Route 3:
An HND with at least Lower Credit, together with a relevant PGD and/or fellowship of an appropriate professional body.

This is particularly useful for applicants considering professional programmes such as MBA-type, MPA-type or specialist professional Master’s programmes.

OOU M.Phil/Ph.D Admission Requirements

OOU uses the M.Phil/Ph.D route for candidates whose Master’s qualification does not meet the threshold for direct Ph.D admission.

For candidates from other universities, a relevant Master’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 can lead to provisional admission into the M.Phil/Ph.D programme.

The candidate must then complete the prescribed coursework and attain a minimum CGPA of 3.50 to proceed to the Ph.D stage.

This distinction is important:

3.00 Master’s CGPA does not mean automatic direct Ph.D admission at OOU.

For candidates in this category, OOU’s published route is M.Phil/Ph.D first, followed by conversion based on performance.

OOU Ph.D Admission Requirements

For direct Ph.D admission, OOU’s general requirement is a relevant Master’s degree from OOU with a CGPA of 3.50 or above.

OOU graduates with Master’s CGPA between 3.00 and 3.49 are instead admitted provisionally into M.Phil/Ph.D and must meet the required performance after two semesters before proceeding to Ph.D.

Candidates with Master’s degrees from other universities and a CGPA of at least 3.00 are also directed through the M.Phil/Ph.D route rather than direct Ph.D admission under the general rule.

OOU O’Level Requirements

OOU’s current postgraduate admission requirements include an important general O’Level condition.

The university states that all programmes require credit passes in English Language and Mathematics, plus three other relevant credits.

That means applicants should not look only at their degree classification when checking OOU postgraduate eligibility.

The O’Level requirements still have to be satisfied.

Some programmes also have additional subject-specific conditions.

For example, the university’s specific requirement for PGD Law includes English Language and English Literature among the required O’Level credits, together with at least a pass in Mathematics.

OOU NYSC Requirement for Postgraduate Admission

One requirement that applicants should not overlook is NYSC documentation.

OOU states that possession of an NYSC Discharge, Exemption or Exclusion Certificate issued by the Directorate is compulsory for admission into its postgraduate programmes.

Therefore, prospective applicants should have the appropriate NYSC document available when preparing their postgraduate application.

OOU Postgraduate Transcript Requirement

OOU also requires applicants to arrange for their academic transcripts to be forwarded by their previous institutions.

The university instructs applicants to request their alma mater to forward transcripts covering the relevant HND, first degree, PGD or Master’s degree to the Secretary, Postgraduate School.

This requirement is especially important for candidates coming from universities other than OOU.

It is better to begin the transcript process early rather than wait until after submitting the online application.

Programme-Specific OOU Admission Requirements

The general requirements are only part of the story. OOU publishes additional conditions for a number of programmes.

Here are some of the more important ones.

OOU Postgraduate Law Requirements

PGD Law

Applicants need at least a Third Class Bachelor’s degree in Law from OOU or another approved university.

They must also have at least five O’Level credits, including:

  • English Language
  • English Literature

and at least a pass in Mathematics.

LL.M

Applicants need an LL.B degree from OOU or another university recognised by the Senate, with at least Second Class Lower.

M.Phil/Ph.D Law

The published requirement is an LL.M with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 for the M.Phil/Ph.D route.

Ph.D Law

Direct Ph.D admission requires an LL.M from OOU with a CGPA of 3.50 or above.

OOU Postgraduate Anaesthesia Requirement

For the Postgraduate Diploma in Anaesthesia, OOU requires a good First Degree in Medicine and Surgery from OOU or another university approved by the Senate.

This is therefore not a programme that a graduate from an unrelated discipline can enter through the ordinary PGD route.

OOU MPH Admission Requirements

For the Master of Public Health, OOU’s published requirement is specifically medical.

Applicants should have an M.B.B.S. or equivalent medical/dental qualification such as MBBS/BDS from a recognised university.

The university also requires at least five years of qualification experience, including internship and NYSC service plus three years of work experience in areas relevant to Public Health.

This makes the OOU MPH requirement substantially different from the general academic Master’s requirement.

OOU Pharmaceutical Analysis PGD Requirement

The Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Analysis accepts candidates with a Third Class honours degree in a relevant science discipline.

OOU specifically lists areas such as:

  • Pharmacy
  • Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Industrial Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Other allied disciplines

Candidates with at least Lower Credit HND in relevant areas may also be considered.

Also read: FUNAAB Postgraduate Courses and Admission Requirements for 2026/2027 Session

OOU Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry Requirement

For M.Sc. Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, OOU requires at least a Second Class Lower degree in one of the specified relevant disciplines, including:

  • Pharmacy
  • Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Botany

Candidates may also be required to undergo a selection process.

OOU Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology Requirement

Applicants for M.Sc. Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology need a qualifying Pharmacy degree.

OOU states that applicants may hold an unclassified first degree in Pharmacy or a classified Pharmacy degree not below Second Class Lower.

Candidates must also have obtained acceptable grades, not below C, in Pharmaceutics courses during their final-year undergraduate examinations.

OOU Architecture Admission Requirements

For M.Sc. Architecture, OOU requires a Bachelor of Architecture degree from OOU or another university recognised by the Senate, with a minimum 2.50 on a 5-point scale.

For M.Phil/Ph.D Architecture, the published minimum Master’s CGPA is 3.00.

Direct Ph.D admission requires a Master’s degree in Architecture with a minimum 3.50 CGPA, and the applicant must submit a research proposal with the application for evaluation.

OOU Fine and Applied Arts Requirements

For the Master’s programmes in Fine and Applied Arts, OOU requires a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with at least Second Class Lower.

For M.Phil/Ph.D Fine and Applied Arts, OOU requires an M.A. in Fine and Applied Arts with a minimum CGPA of 3.00.

Direct Ph.D admission requires an M.A. or MFA from OOU with a CGPA of 3.50 or above.

OOU Urban and Regional Planning Requirements

For M.Sc. Urban and Regional Planning, OOU requires a B.Sc. in Urban and Regional Planning with at least Second Class Lower.

For M.Phil/Ph.D Urban and Regional Planning:

  • OOU graduates with a Master’s CGPA of 3.00–3.49 may enter the M.Phil/Ph.D route.
  • Candidates from other recognised universities require a minimum 3.00 CGPA.

For direct Ph.D admission, the Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning must have a CGPA of 3.50 or above.

OOU Governance Studies Requirements

Governance Studies has its own entry conditions.

For M.Sc. Governance Studies, applicants normally need at least a Second Class Honours Lower Division degree in:

  • Social Sciences
  • Administration and Management Sciences
  • Law

Candidates without a background in Governance Studies or the listed fields need a PGD in Governance Studies or another relevant field.

The professional Master’s route is broader. Candidates with a Third Class degree or HND not below Lower Credit may be considered where they also have a relevant PGD.

For M.Phil/Ph.D Governance Studies, the university lists relevant Master’s degrees from areas including:

  • Governance Studies
  • Political Science
  • Public Administration
  • Peace and Conflict Studies
  • International Relations
  • Local Government Studies

The published CGPA thresholds determine whether the applicant enters the M.Phil/Ph.D route and whether they can subsequently proceed to Ph.D.

Direct Ph.D Governance Studies requires a relevant Master’s degree with a minimum 3.50 CGPA or 60% average.

OOU Computer Science Ph.D Requirements

For M.Phil/Ph.D Computer Science, OOU requires an M.Sc. in Computer Science with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 from OOU or another recognised university.

Direct Ph.D Computer Science admission requires an M.Sc. Computer Science from OOU with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 and above.

How Long Do OOU Postgraduate Programmes Take?

The duration depends on the qualification and whether the student is studying full-time or part-time.

OOU’s current 2026/2027 postgraduate information gives these minimum and maximum periods:

Programme Full-time minimum Part-time minimum Maximum
PGD 2 semesters 3 semesters 4 / 6 semesters
Academic Master’s 3 semesters 4 semesters 6 / 8 semesters
Professional Master’s 3 semesters 4 semesters 6 / 8 semesters
Ph.D 6 semesters 8 semesters 10 / 12 semesters

The university therefore gives part-time students a longer minimum duration for each category.

What OOU Requires From Applicants Beyond Academic Qualifications

There are a few practical requirements that can easily be missed when applicants focus only on CGPA.

OOU requires candidates to:

  • Meet the relevant O’Level requirements.
  • Have the appropriate NYSC Discharge, Exemption or Exclusion Certificate.
  • Arrange for academic transcripts to be sent from their previous institution.
  • Submit photocopies of certificates listed on the application form, including degree, diploma, NYSC and professional certificates where applicable.
  • Satisfy the matriculation requirements of the department running the programme.
  • For Ph.D applications, contact the relevant department to confirm supervisor availability and vacancies before applying.

That final point is especially relevant to doctoral applicants. A candidate can meet the academic requirement and still need to confirm that the department has an available supervisor and research capacity.

Which OOU Postgraduate Programme Should You Apply For?

The answer depends largely on your existing qualification.

If you have a Third Class Bachelor’s degree, the PGD route may be appropriate because OOU accepts Third Class graduates for PGD admission, subject to the specific programme requirements.

If you have a Second Class Lower Bachelor’s degree, you may qualify for many academic and professional Master’s programmes, provided your first degree is relevant to the course.

If you have an HND, OOU provides several PGD and professional Master’s routes, but the exact pathway depends on whether you have Lower Credit and whether a relevant PGD or professional qualification is required.

If you already have a Master’s degree, the CGPA becomes particularly important. A Master’s CGPA of 3.50 or above from OOU can qualify a candidate for direct Ph.D consideration under the general rule, while lower Master’s CGPAs may lead to the M.Phil/Ph.D route.

OOU Postgraduate Admission: A Practical Eligibility Check

Before paying for an application, it is useful to work through these questions:

1. Is your intended course actually listed for 2026/2027?

Check the current postgraduate programme list rather than relying on an old course list.

2. Does your previous qualification match the discipline?

A Second Class Lower degree by itself does not make every Master’s programme available to you.

3. Does your O’Level result satisfy OOU’s requirements?

The university states that its programmes generally require credits in English, Mathematics and three other relevant subjects.

4. Do you have the required NYSC document?

OOU identifies the Discharge, Exemption or Exclusion Certificate as compulsory.

5. Have you started your transcript request?

Your previous institution must forward the required academic transcript to the Postgraduate School.

6. If you are applying for Ph.D, have you checked for a supervisor?

OOU specifically tells Ph.D candidates to contact their relevant departments about supervisor availability and vacancies before applying.

Conclusion

The OOU postgraduate courses for 2026/2027 cover a much wider range of disciplines than the usual Accounting, Business Administration, Economics and Education options found on many postgraduate course lists.

The university’s current list includes specialised programmes such as Cancer Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Governance Studies, Information Sciences, Energy Technology and Management, Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Agricultural Engineering and Fine and Applied Arts, alongside conventional Master’s and doctoral programmes.

On the admission side, the most important thing to remember is that OOU’s general requirement is only the starting point. A Second Class Lower degree is the normal benchmark for many Master’s programmes, while PGD admission can accommodate Third Class graduates and HND holders at the required level. For Ph.D, the Master’s CGPA determines whether a candidate can proceed directly or must first enter through M.Phil/Ph.D.

Applicants should also prepare their O’Level results, NYSC documentation and academic transcripts, and Ph.D candidates should contact their intended department about supervisor availability before submitting an application.

Most importantly, prospective students should check the specific requirements attached to their intended programme, because OOU has additional conditions for programmes such as Law, MPH, Pharmacy, Architecture, Governance Studies, Computer Science and Urban and Regional Planning.
